Identified Need

Voices for Children of the Brazos Valley is a not-for-profit organization that trains volunteer court appointed advocates to serve children in the foster care system. Voices for Children Executive Director Anjuli Renold read David’s book, “Think Beyond Value: Building Strategy to Win” not long after she took over the executive role at Voices for Children. She saw significant value in the V-REEL® language and framework for strategy development and joined David and Joan on the Thinking Beyond podcast to discuss how she might use V-REEL® with her new and growing team. Hopeful that V-REEL® could help her team work more effectively with a common language and enhanced critical thinking, Anjuli called on Joan and David to support the team’s strategic planning retreat.

Value Created

Joan and David met with Anjuli to understand her goals for the retreat and formed a custom plan. Joan facilitated the day-long retreat with Anjuli and the entire Voices for Children team, providing an introduction to the V-REEL® Framework before walking the team through a series of active breakout sessions that allowed all members of the staff to use V-REEL® to support their strategic thinking. By the end of the day, everyone on the staff was using the V-REEL® language and had formed clean, well-conceived strategic plans for achieving identified goals. In addition, within 24 hours of the retreat, Anjuli received a message from one of her leading staff members indicating that she intended to apply the V-REEL® framework to case management decision support.

“As a non-profit executive, I found the V-REEL® framework to be highly effective in the development and implementation of strategy across the board. I recommend David’s book to experienced strategists looking to simplify complex concepts, but also to novice leaders looking to think strategically and communicate effectively. The non-profit sector is all about creating value for volunteers, donors, board members, staff, and the community. V-REEL is an evaluation tool and system framework I now use to drive the strategic development of the organization on every level.”
